Foursquare is a free, smartphone app that uses a GPS system to find out the location of the user. The GPS system allows people to receive recommendations and deals based on the location of the user, user’s friends, and people with similar tastes have been. Foursquare also helps people connect with friends and discover new things to do in many different cities. The app has the ability to recommend places like restaurants, museums, parks, and more, and users can share and save places they visited. It also allows people to find out where their friends are, and users can earn points, badges, and coupons by “checking-in.” It is a great way for people to find new things to do and interact with their environments.1

How does it work?

People can use Foursquare by signing up with their Facebook or Twitter accounts, and this will make it easier for people to connect with their friends. When users “check-in” to a location, friends can see where they are and users can receive recommendations. Every time users “check-in” to a location they earn badges, points, and mayorships, and if they continue to visit that location they earn more badges, points, and mayorships. Also, users can add tips and notes about the location they visited, and other users can also see the information that has been posted.2

Founding and History

Foursquare is founded by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai, and they began creating the first version of Foursquare in Crowley’s New York City home in 2008. Foursquare was launched by Southwest Interactive in Austin, Texas in March 2009.3

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Convenient and easy to use
  • People can easily share tips and recommendations
  • Profitable for businesses as users wrote about their experience at the location4

  • A lot of advertisements can annoy users and it can lose trust in the recommendations suggested by Foursquare
  • It is not much different from other apps like Facebook, Good, Yelp, and etc.
  • It is difficult to collect data about cities because Foursquare has to collect and organize geotagged data. Since it is difficult to obtain data Foursquare can only be used in certain cities.5

Foursquare runs on iOS, Android, Blackberry, and Palm Phones.6
